Coolant Temperatures

If a coolant is too warm, it softens a resin-bonded abrasive disc. As a general rule, if the coolant is more than 15š above room temperature, it is not doing a good cooling job. If the coolant temperature gets too high, some sort of refrigeration is necessary to keep the disc from getting soft.

To find out how much refrigeration is needed on each wet grinding operation, do the following:

1. Measure the coolant temperature just before start-up.

2. Start the grinding operation and measure the time needed for the coolant to increase 15š F.

3. Calculate the number of gallons of coolant in the system.

4. Calculate the refrigeration needed, using this formula:

Gallons of Coolant

Tons of refrigeration needed =
_____________________________
X .625

Minutes to 15š F. increase

EXAMPLE:

800 Gal. of Coolant

800 x. 625

_______________________
X .625 =
______________
= 50 tons
10 Minutes

10

A 50-ton coolant refrigeration system is required for this grinding operation.
